March 2017 Events

UPCOMING EVENTS FOR MARCH 2017

This monthly list of events includes regular meetings and special events of Democratic clubs and caucuses, as well as other organizations’ meetings and special events, including some that are church-sponsored, which we believe may be of interest to our Democratic members. Please be assured that we do not endorse any particular religion or faith (just as churches are not supposed to endorse political parties or candidates). However, as Democrats, we share with many religious organizations a passion for social justice and the political empowerment of people who are underserved. We are more than happy to forward announcements of events and programs which focus on social justice and are sponsored by religious organizations.

The program for the meeting will be, Race in the Criminal Justice System: What Do the Numbers Tell Us?

Race is such an uncomfortable topic to discuss as a general matter that we tend to avoid talking about it.  When we look at the criminal justice system, however, race becomes an important factor in determining how Floridians fare in prosecution, sentencing, and the collateral consequences.  Reviewing publicly available data and recent reporting on sentencing, Carla Laroche will lead a conversation on implicit bias, how race impacts the criminal justice system, and what bills some legislators have filed this year to seek to address these issues.

Carla Laroche is a law fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center, focused on criminal justice reform. She chairs several committees for the American Bar Association and has an impressive professional career and educational background.  (Note that as our speaker, Carla is expressing her views and is not acting as a representative of the SPLC.)
